There are some lovely home-made skin creams on the HOMEMADE HOUSEHOLD page.

Short hair was often the choice of a gal in the 1950s with shorter lenghts at the beginning of the 1950s that eventually lengthened as we entered the mid 1960s.

You can visit our VINTAGE LINKS page (which is still young but growing) to check for links to vintage hair and grooming.

Pincurls are a great way to give short hair a vintage look. This photo story shows the 'set' and the comb out you could try. I prefer to sleep in pincurls as oppsed to curlers and find the curl gives more body and more control over the final hair-do. I even have a silk scarf specifically that I use to sleep in to keep my curls from going freezy. Also, as a girl may like to shower or bath daily, a shower cap is a must, as we vintage gals like to save friday nights to 'wash and set our hair'. That way it is freshest for the weekend.

Although Red lipstick was the primary color at the beginning of the 1950's, other colors were introduced and are still vintage. The Red of the 1940's wartime was often called the 'RED BADGE OF COURAGE' and ladies were encouraged to wear the lipstick daily even to their factory jobs as a sign to returning soldiers or any men 'back home' that woman hood was still in flower.

But, Pink in darker shades which grew lighter as we approached 1959 were popular and available. And a fun new shade, seen on Maryilyn in 1955's "Seven Year Itch" was the lovely coral shade. This would become more prominent by the early sixties and then fade to pale almost invisible pink by the later sixties. At that point the emhpasis was on the eye and the mouth was sometimes so downgraded by the late 60's that it looked as if concealor and not lipstick was applied. I definitely prefer the 1950's shade of pink, red and coral. These are easy to find in modern inexpensive versions. Or, if you are brave of heart and like to 'make your own' try our homemade lipstick on the HOMEMADE HOUSEHOLD page.
